Dr. John Philip Matthews is a prominent researcher of physics who has published over 50 papers in scientific journals such as Nature and SCIENCE. Until 2016, he held a position as Professor in the Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences of Kyoto University, where his main research interests were in high-spatial-resolution satellite remote sensing of lakes, coastal zones, oceans and planetary environments. He is best known for his focused efforts on satellite-based disaster monitoring in order to assist local relief organizations after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster, and his work on the development of a new scheme for El Niño prediction beyond the spring season.
